In fact it was double-clicks acting like triple clicks.  But I suspect
it was preferences for what to do when a double-click was done not being
available rather than the network screwing them up.

Yeah, perhaps.

Well, I tried to focus and make sure I was in the dialog, but couldn't
get it to take keystrokes or unlock.  I ended up killing the
gnome-screensaver that was behind it.

Indeed.  I think the gnome-settings-daemon started it up.
